At Least Six Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghanaian Military Recruitment Event
At least 6 individuals have lost their lives during a crowd crush at a military recruitment event held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The midweek "devastating" incident seems to have been triggered by "a sudden rush of applicants who breached security protocols and stormed the entrances," announced a release from the nation's military.
22 additional individuals were hurt, among them five who are in critical condition.
Thousands had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, Accra, with the aspiration of enlisting in the military.
The country has a youth unemployment rate of approximately 32%, the latest official data indicate, and such recruitment events typically draw massive gatherings and frequently lead to disorderly situations.
The closing date to submit applications for this event was extended by a week to allow for additional candidates, as a number had faced challenges in the application procedure.
Army spokesperson Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede occurred before the planned commencement time of 06:20 GMT.
Ghana's President John Mahama has visited the injured in medical care.
Order has been restored, and the recruitment exercise has now started.
