Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
