The New Mayor Vows a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech

During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
